The Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE)

What is PACE?

The Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) is a unique program that enables older adults to remain in their own homes for as long as possible – even if they qualify for Medicare, Medicaid and nursing home care. Its primary objective is to provide comprehensive care and in-home support that allows older people to age in place, traditionally without charging monthly premiums, co-pays, deductibles, or other fees.

How does PACE work?

Seniors in the PACE program typically visit its day centers one to five times weekly. There, they can see their primary care physicians; enjoy delicious meals, play games, do crafts, and socialize with peers. They can also exercise and choose to participate in physical, occupational, and psychotherapy programs.

At the day center, seniors are able to receive care for their needs while enjoying fulfilling social and recreational activities that reduce isolation and give family caregivers a break.

On days when they don’t go to the center, PACE participants may receive a home visit from an aide skilled at assisting with bathing, dressing, and providing other care. Meals may also be delivered to the home.

PACE provides Transportation

Transportation includes trips to and from the day center and appointments. Doctor visits can occur in the physician office, at PACE center clinic, or at home via telehealth services.

Who is eligible for PACE?

To qualify for the program, adults must be age 55 or older, eligible for nursing home care, and able to live safely in the community with help from PACE. They also must reside within a geographic area covered by a certified PACE program.
